I would suggest a protein drink before training. Research has shown a tremendous benefit from having amino acids floating around as you get a pump. It redirects a great deal more amino acids to working muscles than only taking your protein drink afterwards. This is the whole concept behind Primer and Driver.

If you are trying to drop bodyfat just take the protein. If you are trying to gain, I would suggest some liquid carbs with the protein.
