I was roommates in college, and had many friends there, that were in ROTC and now serving in the Army. The majority of them are middle/upper-middle class from good families. My roommates' parents were corporate executives. A good friend of mine joined the Navy out of high school. Very smart girl and ended up working in intelligence/spying. After 8 years and getting married to another intelligence person, they both decided to leave the service. I believe they are now working for the CIA or other such organizations.
So to say that no one with a good future joins the military is an absolutely false statement. What about all those hopeless people that happened to get into West Point, Annapolis, or CO Springs? Three of the most selective schools in the world - more difficult to be accepted at than Harvard or Princeton. I guess they must all be dead-end dummies.
