Default (opinion poll) needle gauge of T injections

Been doing HRT for 18 mts or so and just injected a 5.5ml dose of T with the same needle, 23x1, as used for the draw and it was as painless as any shot I`ve ever had. Normally draw with a 23x1 and switch to a 27 for the push and it often stings a bit. Ive heard it said that the smaller guages are more painfull. Or maybe I got lucky and missed the nerves. The nurses at the VA use a 21 most of the time for general purpose IM. Question is: Is bigger better and at what point is it not? Opinions please !
Hope all are well
