see your primary care doctor and get an evaluation. He or she should be able to diagnose the disorder and help to isolate some of the possible causes. He or she needs to rule out some medical conditions that can be evaluated thru bloodwork. If he or she finds that your general health is good, the doctor may refer you to a psychologist for psychotherapy or start you on antidepressants or both. When medical doctors refer to me, they know that I will be seeing their patient more often than they will. they expect feedback. For most of my clients this will involve weekly sessions. In some severe cases, this may be twice per week or I may refer them for more intensive in-patient or outpatient treatment. When depression involves more somatic symptoms, i.e. insomnia or intestinal problems, the treatment may require the combined efforts of myself, a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner, and the primary care doctor. Many cases of major depressive episode clear in a few months. some of the more complicated cases with multiple somatic involvement may take several months.
