IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Guy Ducasse Sentenced to One Month Imprisonment

Christine Pagano, a law professor at Golden Gate University, who invited Ellerman to speak to her students about his role in the BALCO saga. Ellerman went to prison for leaking the grand jury testimony of Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield and others to a reporter working for The San Francisco Chronicle.

Pagano said Ellerman’s main message to students in her Professional Responsibility class was for lawyers to “find a mentor” if they find themselves crushed by the pressure of their duties.

“The students were really thunderstruck,” said Pagano. “A couple of girls were crying. Some of the male lawyers were really taking it in too. He said that male lawyers, in particular, become self-sufficient and don’t want to ask for help, and he said they shouldn’t fall into that trap.”

Ellerman is required to give 10 such lectures as part of a harsh sentence handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White. The Daily News wrote last month about the first such lecture.

Pagano said Ellerman claimed he made a mistake in breaking a court order. After a lengthy investigation during which reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams were nearly sent to jail rather than reveal their sources, Ellerman came forward to say he leaked the testimony. He was forced to resign from the California bar, and served 16 months in prison - longer than any other figure in the BALCO case.

Former McIntosh County deputy pleads guilty in steroids case

Dusty Burns, 29, of Checotah was charged with possessing anabolic steroids with intent to distribute, U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling said in a statement. Burns is expected to spend roughly a year in prison.

A U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency investigation revealed that Burns sold the drugs to Jimmy “Rusty” Hamm, 31, a former Creek Nation Lighthorse Police officer who reportedly delivered steroids from a marked patrol car while he was on duty.

Hamm pleaded guilty in September to possession of steroids with an intent to distribute.

The DEA inquiry also indicated that Bobby Brown, 38, of Vian was involved in drug sales. He is accused of selling steroids near Vian High School to buyers who were younger than 21....

Leaving aside the idea that America’s professional sports leagues can simply “set the rules strictly” when it comes to legalizing drugs (they’re already mired in trouble trying to define “no-tolerance”) it’s worth considering Cuban’s argument; the outspoken owner reportedly said steroids could have a place in sports if they were:

1.) Administered by a doctor

2.) Used to help athletes recover from injuries, and

3.) Come with no risk of long-term health effects.

At first those seem like some pretty big pre-conditions, but in fact Cuban is not so much forward-thinking here as he is behind the times.

Doctors were probably administering performance-enhancing drugs to pro athletes even as Cuban spoke. Doctors can be bought - consider Eufemiano Fuentes, the Spanish doctor who got busted in 2006 and whose work is only still coming to light this week (see here). Our own country is full of doctors with DEA licenses and evangelical attitudes about the same hormones that are banned in pro sports. It’s clearly not hard to find health-care providers who speak openly about prescribing steroids: we did (see here for our reporting on Jesse Haggard, and here for a story involving Lisa Routh). But for every outspoken doctor prescribing these drugs, there are surely many more who practice with the discretion that medical professionals are trained to emphasize.

Q:Your career and your personal life seem to have paralleled trends in the fitness/health industry over the past 27 years.

A: I was a body guy, a bodybuilder, sports, performance, I was in the thick of it back in the 1980s, back when the standard gear was a weightlifting belt, a bottle of steroids, and a membership to a hard-core gym. Fitness was secondary to packing on slabs of muscle, by any means necessary.

Q: I'm surprised you brought up steroids. I thought it might be something you'd rather not talk about.

A: People are too hard on themselves when they take the wrong path. To truly be healthy from the inside out we need to practice forgiveness and honesty, we need to forgive ourselves and others. I was a kid then, in my 20s, but still I think it's important to learn and remember the lessons. Most people have gotten involved in unhealthy things at various points in their lives. You gotta take responsibility and own up to that, but then let it go so you can feel good about yourself. People underestimate the importance of emotional health.

Q:Is this a recent shift in your thinking?

A: In a way it feels like a natural evolution. For me, who's been studying this for 20 years, it's not about diet, not about diet pills, not about surgery. It's about transforming from the inside out — letting go of the old unhealthy ways of thinking, acting and reacting and replacing those with new and empowering beliefs about health, about living, about yourself. It's not just a skin-deep process. It actually requires that we take a pretty deep look inwards.. ...

Ex-cop cleared way for dealer

Brady Valentine, 38, pleaded guilty to a one-count criminal information, bypassing a grand jury in a plea agreement. Under terms of the plea, a more serious eight-count indictment returned in 2007 that also accused him of dealing in illegal steroids will be dismissed.

Valentine, who faces up to three years in prison, will be sentenced Jan. 15 by U.S. Dist. Court Judge Samuel Mays.

"This is one of those situations where you have to make the best of what it is," he responded when Mays asked if he wanted to plead guilty.

Valentine was assigned to the police Organized Crime Unit and detailed to the West Tennessee Drug Task Force Interstate Interdiction Unit, which patrols the interstates.

Federal prosecutor Joseph Murphy said that in September of 2007 Valentine talked by phone with a known drug dealer he had known for some years about making a delivery of illegal anabolic steroids from Arkansas to Shelby County.

Whitestone has created a new identity for United Kingdom Anti-Doping, a new governmental organisation set up by UK Sport.

Appointed in August following a credentials pitch, the group was asked to represent the values of UKAD, which Whitestone chief executive Chris Lightfoot describes as ‘creating a level playing field of competition without drug cheats’.

The drug detection, enforcement and education agency will work with all athletic and sporting governing bodies across the UK.

Lightfoot says, ‘There is a temptation to make Government bodies look too police-like. Our approach was about openness, honesty and transparency.’

The identity uses ‘translucent tones and colours’ to ‘accentuate clean and pure values’. ...

Doctor in steroid probe arrested after international manhunt

Haggard disappeared after ABC15 went undercover inside Revolution Medical Centers, documenting how anabolic steroids were being prescribed illegally.

The ABC15 Investigators also uncovered several patient deaths.

At this time, neither Haggard nor anyone else associated with Revolution Medical Centers is facing any charges related to these deaths.

Haggard fled the country while state and federal agents were closing in on his practice.

While on the run, he maintained a blog in which he chronicles how he avoided arrest and challenges law enforcement's knowledge of medicine.
