Default any other guys here with a B.S. in chemistry?

I just graduated with a B.S. in chemistry. Just curious if any other real chemists on this board (not bathroom/kitchen chemists ). I should try making my own gear sometime . After I finish up this summer school class I'll start applying for jobs.

Uhhhhh, it is sort of the pre-requisite of being a chemist. Now, if he gets a job in sales, then he won't be a chemist. However, if he works in relation to his degree, then he'll be a chemist.

I have a degree in a biology with an emphasis on genetics and a degree in biochemistry with an emphasis in enzymology. I do not use either degree in my job I have now.....

a college degree, IMO, is overrated sometimes.

I disagree......Even though you might not have found a job that fits what you have obtained with your degree, it has given you a better oppurtunity to get a head start on things.....And overall it is just good to be very educated no matter what the field is in........

I agree that it is always a good thing to be educated...no one can ever take that away from you. I don't regret going to college and wil probably go back.

But you don't know my situation bro. It was not that "I could not find a job in that field"...it was becasue I chose NOT to enter those fields as the pay was shit, the hours were long, and it really isn't that exciting.

My point was that in high school you get it shoved down your throat that if you don't go to college you will not be successful...and that is not necessarly true. I have friend who did not go to college who are making more than I am....and I'm doing pretty well for myself for being 24 years old.

But like you said, an education does open doors that would otherwise be shut.

Yes, it does. There is no government "chemist" license; although you would have to be licensed to use certain chemicals or compounds (one couldn’t chemically distill hydrocodone in their own apartment without a license, for example.) But yes, it does make one a chemist.

On a side note: I know it wasn’t your intent, but I found it slightly insulting that someone just graduated college with a chemistry degree, and you actually claimed they weren’t a chemist.

I think a person with a physical sciences major who did lab work is closer to a chemist than a poli sci major.

Dude you spent four years studying chemistry and by this time have taken plenty of classes with labs and you should feel that you have the ability to make sense out of chemistry or at least know where to begin to find the answers. I am currently finishing up my doctorate in chemistry and I think I know how you feel. You start to question your wits about the field of chemistry because there are so many disciplines with emphasis on different things i.e. analytical compared to organic. But let me reassure you that the basic understanding you have acquired with your BS will more than prepare you for a career in chemistry. You learn the most, not in class, but at the job. Experience is everything. Oh and for the record I am little scared of homebrewers out there claiming to have the same knowledge as a "chemist." There is alot of shit going on in any type of reaction, and something just as simple as a different isomer of your product can kill you. So try not to give hasty advice. No disrespect though, just a little cautious.

I am a good BS'er, especially when my girlfriend asks me what all those priority mail packs are.
