Default Follow up story...Dr Scally

This is a follow up to a open letter Dr. Scally posted on this site about 2 years ago regarding this investigation. I assume the current political climate did not help his situation.

Doctor loses license over steroids for bodybuilders
---------------------------------------------------

Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

The state has revoked the license of a Houston endocrinologist accused
of prescribing steroids to bodybuilders and fined him $190,000.

The fine levied against Dr. Michael Charles Scally on Friday is the
second-largest in the history of the Texas State Board of Medical
Examiners. The medical board also ordered its largest-ever physician
fine — $845,000 — Friday against Houston orthopedic surgeon Eric
Scheffey for performing unnecessary surgeries.

The medical board based its decision in the Scally case on the medical
records of eight patients treated in the mid-1990s to 2001. The
patients included weight lifters, bodybuilders and a professional
fighter who were taking steroids.

Scally, who practiced at *******, said he was running a detox
program for steroid users. His patients came to him, he said last week,
because they were suffering side effects.

He called the medical board's treatment of him "heavy-handed, biased
and unfair. ... I've never done anything to hurt a patient. Every one
of my patients got better."

However, the board found Scally, 52, diagnosed hormone abnormalities
without ruling out other possible causes for patient symptoms. Two
endocrinologists who reviewed Scally patient records for the board said
his steroid prescriptions were "not within the standard of care."
