Default getting out of a commitment

hey bros..i am in somewhat of a dilemma about what to do in my current situation, here goes

about 6 months or so ago, i joined the navy, signed the contract, commited to 5 years, however my ship date is not until march of 2005

anyways, at the time i had joined, i had just broken up with my (ex) girl, and had some financial problems going on..anyways i didnt really know what i wanted or what to do, and i decided on about a days worth of thought that i would just join the navy

it has been a few months and i am over the break up, taken care of my financial problems, and things are going well...i have been thinking a lot and regret my decision to join the navy, i feel like i made the decision without thinking about it at all, and now that i am thinking about it, it isnt something i want to devote the next 5 years of my life too...

i am not sure however, how i could get out of the commitment...if there are any lawyers or bros knowledgeable on the subject here on the board i would appreciate the advice

also, at the time i signed the contract, i had a clean record, but currently i have a misdemeanor on my record, which i got about 2 months ago...i am not sure if that would void the contract or not..

i am sorry for the long and boring post, but would like some advice on what to do if anyone has any ideas..

thanks

Well i wont call you a dipshit for just up and joining the Navy as we all just kinda jump into things at time without thinking. I really have no idea or answer for you bro. I would think there is a way u can get out of it. Have you done anything as far as training or anything WRT the NAVY?? I'm sure there are some others on here tha thave been there before and will be able to help you out!

I believe that your contract isnt binding until the final signing in and paperwork done around your ship date

I may be wrong I am basing this on my experience in the army when i joined a long long time ago 89-93 .

at any rate just not showing up would/could be a big mistake

Don't sign the last contract and technicaklly they can't make you go. Of course, they are going to make you feel like shit-- and taunt you. Just don't make them go out looking for you-- the government has nothing better to do than to go after people for stupid things.

I say start taking college classes towards a degree, listen to a lot of Cat Stevens records (hahaha-- and tell them you love him!), and maybe hint to them you might be gay.... They won't puish you in if you seem like you might make trouble or if you on the path to a career.

Worse comes to worse, try starting a business. Basically, the more you are committed to outside the navy before entering, the less they will want to disrupt it.
