Default How to train a Rottie

So, after much debate I decided to buy a new puppy. A Rottweiler. I named him Diablo and he is a great addition to the family (an Akita and a Chow). Well, he is being a bit persistant on pissing on the carpet even after taking him out numerous times a day and also using pee pads. I am crate training him and he is doing very well with that (hasn't pissed in the crate for the last 4 days). So, does anyone have any ideas on how to housebreak this little devil? Also, I am going to take him through obedience school when he gets a little older. He also likes to try and eat his poop after doing the deed and I have to watch him closely. WTF is up with that? Lastly, any ideas on training him on a leash? Put him on one yesterday for a little walk and he hated it. Would not move an inch. He was 8 weeks old Thursday.
Thanks.

Wow, I just watched a dog training video yesterday because my dad got a new Brittany Spaniel. According to the video, they don't actually have any real bladder control until 4 months, so you've got 8 more weeks to go. You could try putting meat tenderizer on his food. This may stop him from eating his shit.

With the leash, you may just have to wait until he's older. My new puppy does the same thing. She's 11 weeks.

What does the meat tenderizer do?

I don't know. I think it makes it smell unappetizing on the way out...as if it smells that appetizing to beign with. But, hey, dogs are silly.

Hahaha! Right, right. It's fucking disgusting. The smell of dog shit makes me gag. Maybe it's the nutty, delicious flavor?

I traink professional K-9's for a living. 8 weeks is too early to be bothered with housebreaking and leash training really. Keep doing the crate training routine. Put him on a leash, but don't yank him everywhere or else he will end up hating to go for a walk, and will not do well in obedience in the future. Puppies at that age will piss and shit wherever, they don't know better. You just kind of have to be patient and wait it out somewhat...then wait for the chewing stage...lol...Dr. Nick

Right. It may be a huge pain in the ass, but we've found that taking the dog out every time it gets up has eliminated most, but not all, of the indoor pissing. It certainly sucked nuts today as it was pouring all day, but I guess it's better than having in piss in the house.

I do not agree with Dr. Nick ,I also train k-9's for obedience and attack, even at a young age dogs can be trained to walk on leash, basic tricks and obedience skills.rewards and consistency are the keys. as far as the bowel movement around week 13 or 14 they should be totally housebroken.I have a few rotts myself, If you need further assistence I'd be glad to help.

I have had a few Rotts and trained them myself. At 8 weeks mine could sit and shake. They were a little older when they learned the leash. They fought it a couple of times and than learned fast. If you want any tips than hit me up. By the time they were 3-4 months I had mine sitting, staying, lying down, shaking, rolling over, fetching, getting a drink if i say water, loading up in the pickup if i say truck, amongst other things. It was easy and I had no background except one pup when i was a kid that we trained using some video my mom had watched. As long as you have a quality dog, then it could be sitting and shaking by this weekend. here is my male. I lost him this year

Bruno, I never said it couldn't be done, but for someone without any training experience like US, this should be liminted. People are lazy and want their pets to progress extremely fast. I train Narcotic Detection, Bomb Detection, Cadaver Detection, and Handler Protection, (bite work), and have been doing so for years. My advise is fair and formal for anyone who doesn't do this on a daily basis...Dr. Nick.

Actually just scold them; don't hit them or stick his nose in it and then take him outside and tell him good boy and that after you move the poo outside. They will go to the smell and take another sh*t. Consistency is the key and having someone there full time to keep up the program.

I'm getting a Presa Canario and the breeder stated the pup will be house broken when I pick my dog up at 10 weeks. They have a set-up where the puppies go outside with the bitch and learn by repetition. The pup will also be taught not to snap at food or a hand with food in it. So basically you can give food to the puppy, reach in and take it back out of the dogs mouth and then give it back without being snapped at.

Lots of time and love can go a long way

I have a puppy pit bull and she is now about 6 months. I had the same problem. I read in a magazine about a study that was done that said if you say "hurry" the dog senses that you want it to hurry up and piss, I know sound ridiculous, but I started saying that every time I took her out and she would go to the bathroom right when I said hurry, its crazy. If I say "hurry" I could make her go on her food probably if I wanted to. Also, make sure to take him out every time after he eats or drinks , i found that was when more likely my dog would piss/shit. Good luck ,it takes a while but it will come. Also, like I believe madman said scolding works really well too just make sure you sound like you are beyond pissed when you do it.

Good luck with training the dog....As you probably know it will take lots of patience. Me and my girl were looking at getting a boxer puppy a few months ago and we picked up a few books that seemed to have alot of info in them. We got "training boxers for dummies" or something like that and there was alot of stuff in it. Plus you can referance it then any time if you have other questions.
Good luck with the Rot...Those are kick ass dogs
