i have a theory about how they track downloaded songs

hey guys, i've been downloading music for quite some time. I always find that when there is a new "hot" song out there are quite a few mp3's with a bitrate of around 256 or something obsurd. I'll try to download one and there will be a corruption, obviously a loop. I usually try to download those around the 128 range. I was thinking that maybe the record company is releasing those and tracing the the ip. If you download enough, they come after you. Maybe a little too intricate, but what do you think. Maybe.

thts why i dont use those p2p download programs. irc is the only way to go, sometimes ill use bittorrent too. when i was a freshman living on campus one day i got a call from a lawyer at universal pictures. he said he had me on 200 some counts of illegally distributing copyrighted material. i was sharing movie files over the internet, scared the shit out of me. i guess they scan the servers at universities all over the nation and bust a ton of people. he made me shit my pants but i never got in trouble

I wish I knew how they decide to bust. I always figured it was the people that downloaded the most stuff, but there was this lady in our town that got busted for downloading 5 fricken songs. It made me think twice before downloading

i have heard to keep your shared songs or shared files empty. Not sure if this works or helps or not

There have to be ways to avoid the MPAA and the RIAA from filing suits on your ass. I mean where I am at now, there are too many people to count that sell Bootleg Material. So if they can always have the newest release motion pictures that are still at the theatre then I know there is a way it can be done.

But guys help me out with this IRC stuff I keep hearing and reading about. I know nothing of it but I hear that IRC have any and almost everything you can possibly want and without the worries of getting caught. Is this true? Give me the 411 guys.

I have a theory as well. I believe that there are those that are employed by the ISP that monitor sites such as P2P networks and Bit-torrents and report the activities. Much like how MPAA has offered rewards to Motion Picture Theatre's that catch and report those that illegally record movies. I also believe that the ISP themselves report the activities as well to ward off any potential lawsuits and such. I mean think about Aol and its involvement with its own music services and that is why I don't do anything strange when I am using aol.

Now I have some thoughts of how to avoid some of the detections though. First of all get an ISP account using a pre-paid credit card that are available now a days. That or use a prepaid internet card. Purchase a Mp3 player with atleast 20 gb harddrive and download from a public library.

you can set proxies to connect to most of the services. however, then you are limited to the bandwidth of your proxy in downloading.

as far as them catching your downloading: all theyd have to do is have someone write a script that raondomly selects ppl and checks how many files they have available. if they qualify to a given value, say 1000, all they have to do is download anything from you, use a netstat command or something similar, and they have your host and IP just that quick.

thats why they are suing anonymous IPs instead of ppl: untill your isp gives you up, if they do, they dont have a clue who you are.

I can tell that you are pretty knowledgeable so how can we protect ourselves and become invincible to the MPAA and RIAA? Can you assist with this inquiry? Also I still believe that AOL and several other ISP monitor what sites you view and report any activities they deem harmful. I mean AOL has that their own music download service right?

first of all, unless you are moving some major bandwidth of mp3s, the riaa wont fuck with you likely.

now the mpaa are getting crusty, but still your talking about one fish in an ocean. 60million ppl in the us alone use p2p.

if you can find a high speed blind proxy, that ends your worries there. but those dont stay around long, because they are usually dsl/cable etc connections that have been hacked.

more practical things are firewalls, and a router. those can help alot, not only for this either.

the thing is, p2p means that you are connecting to other ppl directly. while the decentralized network makes it hard to shut down and offers some protection for sharman vis a vis piracy, its pretty much open to ppl with the knowledge. thats never gonna change.

my security setup for downloading from p2p:

software firewall like zone alarm. this will help cloak your pc from pings etc.
router from wally world. same as the firewall, but this is the first line of defense. between the 2 you ought be to covered.
hacked kazaa like kazaa revolution if you use kazaa.
the program MRU Blaster [erases Most Recently Used filelists hidden on windows]
a program called Active Ports. this gives a up to the date list of the ports being used and possibly by what. you can monitor connections live, and augment your firewall/router with it.
continous and regularly updated antivirus/spyware stuff. i suggest antivir and adaware.

personally, i use Xandros Linux to download stuff and internet things mostly. then i just move them over to the windows partition before i log out.

linux has a bad assed built in firewall. you can set another one called firestarter with it and your damn near a fortress.

but basically, theres not alot you can do to stop them, but you can make them earn it. the more defenses you put up the less likely you areto be looked at. theyre searching for the marks with radmins on there PC. as it is, theyve only sued a couplehundred ppl, so it would seem that basic internet probing and hacking is out of there realm.

set me loose with a ip range and nmap on linux, and ill own awhole network.

Here's how the recording industry really finds you..

Thick uploads all these naked Pictures of himself... These pics secretly have a virus in them that looks for mp3's. Once the pics are downloaded the virus launches itself, checks your hard drive and then reports back to the RIAA... So basicly if you don't download any files that have the words... chiro_gay_love in the title.. you'll be okay

moving them out of your folder eliminates them from the probing eye [and finger] of riaa etc.

there arent any trojans, nor any other way, of being able to view a persons content on there pc. EXCEPT: remote administrators aka radmins. these are like trojans sorta. they also show up on AV scans, legit or not, to allow a person to disable them. these have business applications, but have been recruited by hackers.

basically, theres really no way for anyone to look around on your HDD outside of having your pc in there laps.

yes, once you get ythe router up right, itll help alot. its a trial and error type of thing at first, but its solid and secure.
