Default Marine Corp. Officer runs...

Anyone know how fast you have to run a 3 miler to be able to get through Marine Corp. OCS successfully? Thinking about joining and I'm pretty sure I can make it through the mental stuff, any team-building or personal obstacle course or activity, but I'm just not sure about the running part because I've rather neglected it for the past 3 years. I know an 18 minute 3 mile is what will get a maximum score and 28 minutes is the minimum needed to get in, but what I'm wondering is what is the average pace of the run (e.g., 8 minute mile) that is used during the actual OCS training? I'm looking at job options because I only have one more year of this sweet vacation called college and the whole philosophy major thing limits my "normal job" options somewhat. I've noticed that there are quite a few military guys on here and was hoping for an answer.

I’m enlisted USMC, but here’s the best break down:
Be ready to run 8min miles during PT at OCS. The PFT, which is made up of pull ups (5pt each, 20 getting you 100 points) crunches (1pt each, 100 in 2min getting you 100pt) and running 3 miles. Get 15 pull-ups, 100 crunches and run the 3 mile in 23min will get you a first class PFT. As long as you get a 1st class PFT, which would be run maybe three times during OCS, you'll be fine.

Isn't a perfect run some where in the 16minute 3mile mark? My old 1stSgt could run it in 16:45 and a Cpl could run it in 16:20. That is an insaine pace though. I could never do it. I ran a 19minute 3mile and that was ruff.

Default Training program...

Yeah, I'll definitely take you up on the offer for a training program to get my running better. I started running again on 9/8/04. I'm currently running 2 miles twice a week at a pace of about 9 minutes per mile. I also do two full body weightlifting routines each week (not sure if that'll affect it). Like I said, I'm not exactly a runner but I'm working on changing that so if you want to post the training program, it'd be appreciated.

Quantico is nice bro....i did my school training there,...

Are you going to Cali or SC???

now is about the best time to go if u are going to SC....not too hot or cold.....it will be cold when your through but like he bro said.....its all a mind game...

You will get processed, then after about a week they assign you to your batallion and company...

I was 2nd Battalion.....our Barracks overlooked the parade deck on parris island...

the night before our gradution our heavy (discipline guy) brought us all pizza and brought a few of us into the DI hut....he gave us each a beer.....i am telling you....months without beer....and eating like you have to there......you get drunk quick...that was cool of him.....

you will love the motivation runs, they are cool....

just dont volunteer for anything.....they take people to perform duties.....and you will be more than occupied just adjusting to military life....

you will cherish mail call, and occassionally you are allowed a phone call....if we did better than 18 mins....on the three mile run.....i got 17:56.....

we got 30 mins to call home...awesome bro....

You will have great memories...hats off to you for joining now....shows that your good to go,.,

Semper Fi marines, JoblessPhilosopher, out of the 10 years I was in I got a 300 PFT every single time, its hard but fuck it the run only last as long as you make it last I did the 3 mile in 17:45 I was hauling ass, and I used to smoke like a fucking chimminy drink like a fish.

you WILL ALL keep your grubby test-charged paws off of my girl when im gone!!!!!!

thanks alot for all the insight and motivation. im lookin forward to it soooo fuckin badly! cant wait to get outta illinois.

dude thats awesome that you were a scout/sniper. I dont know if you know him or not, but he is a recruiter now in Mt Vernon Illinois and he was a Scout/Sniper......SSGt Benkie. Bad dude......he was an instructor and all that good stuff.

i def want to try out for a smaller more specialized unit. i want to do a year atleast in an infantry unit just to gain the experience that will help me with SS, FAST, Recon, etc. but...........gotta take it one step at a time. gotta get through boot first then off to SOI. im goin to Cali. i hear the weather is nice this time of year.

thanks again fellas and keep the tips comin.

one thing i WAS told that is contradictory to what one of you said......i was told to volunteer for EVERYTHING while in boot. why the contradiction?
