Default Turing pro

Is it harder to turn pro as a bodybuilder today (year 2000's) or was it harder to turn pro in the mid to late 80's? With all the "supplements" and size requirements are National level bodybuilders having to jump through a higher hoop to get their pro card or was it harder back in the 80's?

If you ask Lee Priest, it depends which judge(s) you sleep with.

The competition has always been close, but in recent years physiques have obviously gotten sicker and thicker. How many pro's had striated glutes in the mid 80's? Not many. Next question...how many of the top 5 (in each weight class!) at the 2003 nationals had striated glutes? Pretty much all of 'em.

Then or today, you gotta be the shit to place top 5 @ a national show (EVEN the JUNIOR USA), let alone grab your pro card.

Good luck man!!

PS - Don't forget about the little people when you move from the NPC to the IFBB.

I would think it is much harder and unhealthier now by an overwhelming amount. JMO

Actually that's the only thing that really scares me about bodybuilding in the year 2004. The amount of drugs that has to be used. I love this sport but I don't wanna take all those drugs to turn pro.

I mean I cannot speak for every guy who is pro or Nationally ranked but I know there has to be some guys taking large amounts. I don't wanna get sick. If you lose your health then you have nothing.

I'm not sure of Flex's situation and I to be honest I don't wanna know. That's Flex's business and I love the guy and wish him well. However, I saw a couple of pictures of him since his surgery and I feel so sad for him.

I hate seeing Flex the way he is. It's like "DAMN tell me it ain't true". Again, I don't know Flex's medical situation and don't wanna know becuz it's not my business.

I guess the smart bodybuilders "Lee Labarda" Dorian Yates and some others were smart enough to make their money and get out. It's like a boxer or football player who stays around too long.

After bodybuilding become a business man or woman. That's the smart thing to do.

What do you guys think?

nute, i commend you for caring about your body and your health. but you see, every body reacts differently to 'chemistry'. for all we know yates and even labrada may have medical problems that remain undisclosed to the general public. even if they don't, how do you know that dorian didn't take more shit than flex and his body was just able to handle it better? it's like one guy can have 5 beers and not see straight, while another guy of the same size can have 10 and drive home with not a problem. hypothetically, labrada may have taken more drugs than prince but prince is now fucked. you just don't how the body will react to long-term high doses of many different chemicals. that's why it's called a crapshoot. modern-day competitive bodybuilding that is...

to answer your question, there's no doubt in my mind that it is much more dangerous trying to turn pro today than it was 20 years ago.

Those are the magic words here. "Long-term".

With the exception of Prince, Wheeler and a few others, their systems are either handling it (in the present), or they aren't being publicized. I don't think the short term problems are where we'll see the most damage. The true test of the potential health dangers will be shown in life span.

Do you think they are selling their souls, so-to-speak? Sure, they look good as hell for a few years, maybe even a decade or longer. But are the years of doing what they are doing going to chop time off the backend of their lives? We'll find out for certain in a few decades I suppose.

One last thing to think about...which has greater longevity?
A Great Dane or a little poodle?
