Default help with an argument- negative net calories

having a discussion with my sister

i ve suggested that certain foods take more energy to digest than their total calorific value. famously celery is one such example, but i looked on the internet and read about other fibrous products like spinach and salad and cucumbers, but i also read that some fruits like apples and berrys have a net loss

does that mean that one could eat as many apples and berrys as humanly possible and not gain weight through calory consumption

cheers i was just wondering as ive been limiting my berrys and apples due to the sugar

cheers

Every calorie counts. There is no "magic" way that they can just disappear. The fiber offset thing is a myth also.

So to answer your question, eating 2 apples is the same as eating the same amount of calories in a piece of cake, or candy, or whatever. The only difference is that apples are more nutrient dense and may have a different effect in terms of hormonal response, etc. etc.

It's all about thermodynamics.

I gotta disagree here. While I fully embrace the 1st law of thermodynamics and as it relates to calories in a closed system, we are talking about a system that operates at different efficiency depending on the energy source.

Cold ice-cream has the exact same amount of "calories" as warm ice-cream yet by your own prescribed laws of thermodynamics, the cold ice-cream will result in a net less amount of energy supplied to the body.

I see corn in my crap all the time...does that mean i magically extracted all the calories out of it and left the kernals intact? WOW!

I don't know the answer to the original poster's question however...

i have a bit of an eating disorder- i kinda have to stuff my face all the time, or not at all- so basically i try and eat at restaurants because im more in control as you have to order- rather than constantly going back and forth to the fridge.

at the moment im eating tons of veg and my main protein source is fish, as it means im getting less calories than if i was doing the equivalent with crap carbs or even with animal proteins.

in the evenings, i either go out to distract myself from eating, or i eat nothing all evening (which i can do) or what i am trying to do at the moment is a middle way- im eating loads green veg like broccoli and celery and apples, as the calory amount is negligable.

i guess its better than either starving myself, or gorging myself on carbs and animal products- which is kinda what id be doing otherwise

We are not what we eat but what we assimulate. If a person under stress they do not secret proper enzymes and can end up in nutrient defiecincy despite normal caloiie consumption. look at cystic fibrosis.
