Question is my blood test normal?

Hello,
I have mild gynecomastia, so i did a blood test to see what caused it,
I found my results like this:

TESTOSTERONE:
21 NMOL/L (8 - 35 )
OESTRADIOL:
77 PMOL/L
SHBG:
24 NMOL/L (12 - 60 )
FREE TESTOS INDEX:
87.5 UNITS (20 - 200)
LH:
3.9 IU/L
FSH:
1.8 IU/L
PROLACTIN:
200 MIU/L (100 - 400 )

are those results normal?

Thanks

Default Gynecomastia

Some causes of gynecomastia include:
1. Excess Estrogen, e.g. estradiol from high testosterone levels
2. Excess Progesterone - which increases the potency of estrogens
3. Excess Prolactin
4. Low dopamine activity - which increases prolactin - such as from various medications.

"Normal" is a vague term. Many people use it to mean within some decided range.

You have the right to talk about "normal". That means that the results fall within a reference range derrived under questionable circumstances. You are one of the few physicians I know who looks beyond reference ranges.

I am not asking about Gynecomastia.
I asked if my blood test is normal or not, and what i mean by normal is, if my blood test results fall within the normal ranges or not.

Each laboratory provides a reference range for each test. The reference range is specific and generally unique for each laboratory. That is, each laboratory for the same test may have a difference reference range.

Each laboratory also has a certain accuracy with regard to their test values. Some labs are more accurate than others. This unfortunately can only be found by experience and word of mouth, unless the lab publishes its tolerances for error.

If a lab test results falls within the reference range, it is often considered "normal" by many physicians.

Using the example:

TESTOSTERONE: 30 NMOL/L (8 - 35)
OESTRADIOL: 30 PMOL/L
SHBG: 30 NMOL/L (12 - 60)
FREE TESTOS INDEX: 90 UNITS (20 - 200)
LH: 6.0 IU/L
FSH: 3.0 IU/L
PROLACTIN: 300 MIU/L (100 - 400)

For that particular lab test group, testosterone, SHBG, Free testos index and Prolactin are within the reference range, and are thus "normal" using the definition of "normal" as a value within the reference range.

The reference ranges for Oestradiol, LH, and FSH are not known, and thus "normal" cannot be determined.

If the question is hypothetically whether or not a cause for gynecomastia can be determined by using the above lab tests alone, then the answer is "no" because there is too much missing data including the complete health history, a physical evaluation, further lab testing, etc.

Default Re: is my blood test normal?

marianco,

thanks very much for all the information that you provided,
I understand all you said but I will cut to the main thing i am asking,
I obviously wrote the results with the normal range so that means i know some of it are normal, but what i am not sure about is the oestradiol result mainly and the fsh,
so if you know the normal range for the oestradiol, please help.
if u r not sure, i can tell u more information about the gynecomastia and my case but that wasn't my question,
anyway,
for the last 2 years i wasn't working, but out walking and eating.
I was eating mainly chickens, a lot of it and a lot of cola and for 3 months before i noticed this, i was eating everyday turkey!
for medicines,
I have migraines so i was taking a medicine which contains Meprobamate and Ergotamine for 2 years but i stopped it months before i noticed the gyneco.
I was taking every day Topamax ( Topiramate ) and that was right before and after i noticed the gyneco, so i believe that was the reason (?)
I was taking occasionally Rivotril ( Clonazepam ), half tablet of the half mg tablets but only once or twice a week for sleeping.
some people say that taking topamax with rivotril may cause a lot of damage inculding gyneco(?)

Other than that i was taking paracetamol and Migraliev which contains codeine.
I don't take any drugs by the way

If you can tell what's the reason that caused me gynecomastia, please help me.

My doctor is not sure ....

Thanks

The units in your results look like mine (from Denmark). I know they are used much in Europe and in Canada.

The reference for Estradiol is 0-200, and I have been told you want to be near the middle.

If you want to translate your result to pg/ml (used in USA) you need to divide your result in pmol/L with 3.671.

Could it not be from high total Estrogen ?
(his estradiol seems to be low-normal)

Of the 3 main Estrogens Estroadiol is the bad guy. But one needs to test Total E's if high they can be the cause.

no one has mentioned the fact that the actual receptors in the breast tissue have a lot to do with suscepitibility to gyno

some guys could have sky high estrogen and not get gyno, others get it very easily

if i have low estrogen then how come i have gyneco?
even if there was any tumor, the estradiol should have been high!
I did alpha feto protein and ultrasound and the doctor said normal.
I dont know what's wrong with me...

it doesn't look like you have 'low' estradiol

I remember reading somewhere too that progesterone can be a big factor in gyno

someone here said it's normal-low, and it's not very high ( higher than 200 ) to cause an abnormality like this
