Maca: Peru's Natural Viagra
By: Cris Kilham

Sexual Health Center

The South American country of Peru is home to numerous beneficial plants, including maca, a legendary sex-enhancing root passed down from the Inca. I heard about maca for years. It has been dubbed "Peruvian ginseng," even though it bears no relation to ginseng. But like ginseng, the plant is employed to increase strength, energy, stamina, libido and sexual function, a winning combination of health benefits if there ever was one.

During the height of the Incan empire, legend has it that Incan warriors would consume maca before entering into battle. This would make them fiercely strong. But after conquering a city, the Incan soldiers were prohibited from using maca, to protect the conquered women from their powerful sexual impulses. Thus as far back as 500 years ago, maca's reputation for enhancing strength, libido and fertility was already well established in Peru.

Today, maca's popularity is very much on the increase, as people discover that the plant really does boost libido, sexual function and overall energy.

In Peru, maca is used by men and by women who want to put more fire into their sex lives. And in the U.S., Europe and Japan, dietary supplements containing maca are gaining ardent devotees.

The more maca or maca extract you consume, the more benefits you are likely to get. In toxicity studies conducted in the U.S., maca showed absolutely no toxicity and no adverse pharmacologic effects. In animal studies, the more maca animals consume, the stronger and more sexually active they become. You can be generous with the amounts of maca products you take. With maca, you have a safe, effective, nontoxic way to significantly boost your sexual function, without the hazards of prescription drugs.

Reuters, august 15, 2001.

Peru’s ‘miracle‘ maca can boost your sex drive by 200 % according to a study presented on Wednesday. The powerful plant cultivated for more than two millenniums, in the harsh high Andes at altitudes of more than 13,000 feet, is the basis of a nutritional supplement often dubbed Peruvian ginseng.

Scientist Gustavo Gonzales of Peru’s Cayetano Heredia University, told a news conference the nine month trial involving men between 20 and 40 years old, pointed an 200% lift in libido and up to a doubling of sperm production. The research also proved that maca has an important effect as an energizer, acting over the energy reserves of body fat.

According to reports from the international medical community, the maca plant, definitely has energy-giving properties, boosts physical and sexual performance.

Nature & Health Magazine,
December 1999/ January 2000)

Rather than hormone replacement therapy (HRT), millions of women are putting their faith in a remedy which has been used for 10,000 years, which is safe and amazingly effective: a cruciferous root vegetable from Peru called maca.

The scientist responsible for much of the current knowledge of the maca root is Dr .Gloria Chacon de Popivici, a biologist trained at the University of San Marcos, in Lima, Peru. Dr. Chacon says that maca root works in a fundamentally different way than HRT, promoting optimal functioning of the hypothalamus and the pituitary, thereby improving the functioning of all the endocrine glands .responsible of producing your own hormones . It is important to remember that maca does not itself contain any hormones, but its action on the body jogs the pituitary into producing the precursor hormones which ultimately end up raising estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, as well as helping to balance the adrenal glands, the thyroid and the pancreas. But this occurs naturally, not with time-bomb drugs which throw the entire body into a dangerous state of confusion.

And men, too, find that maca can counteract the difficulties they may experience in maintaining good sexual relationships as they age, due to a general slowing down in the output of the endocrine glands."

Gloria Chacon de Popivici, PhD.

This biologist/author has done the most important scientific work to date on the maca plant. In particular, Dr. Chacon isolated four alkaloids from the maca root and carried out animal studies with male and female rats given either powdered maca root or alkaloids isolated from the roots. In comparison with the animal control groups, those receiving either root powder or alkaloids showed multiple egg follicle maturation in females and, in males, significantly higher sperm production and motility rates than control groups.

Dr. Chacon established that it was the alkaloids in the maca root, not its plant hormones, that produced fertility effects on the ovaries and testes of the rats. These effects are measurable within 72 hours of dosing the animals. Through the experiments, she deduced that the alkaloids were acting on the hypothalamus-pituitary gland, which explains why both male and female rats were afflicted in a gender-appropriate manner. This also explains why the effects in humans are not limited to ovaries and testes, but also act on the adrenals, giving a feeling of greater energy and vitality, and on the pancreas and thyroid as well.

Implications of Dr. Chacon’s discovery of the pituitary stimulating effects of maca are enormous. What it appears to mean is that hormone replacement therapy, even the natural varieties, will no longer be the gold standard.

Urology magazine

A recent study was published in the April 2000 issue of Urology, the prestigious medical journal that first published the Viagra™ studies. This study scientifically demonstrated that the standardized Maca, the extract in MacaActive supplements, improves libido, sexual function and energy. In fact, the energy and sexual activity of the test subjects nearly DOUBLED after taking the herb for 21 days!

100 % Pure and concentrated natural Maca is what our whole product MacaActive consists of. Nothing else but pure MacaActive supplements are what you really need to get a better and healthier sexual life and to obtain that extra energy and vitality your body needs.

I just got a refill of Maca in the mail yesterday I have been off it for 3 weeks and my libido has gone way down. This time I bought Gelatinized Maca a KG cost $53.00. I am not crazy about the taste to me it taste like it is burnt but not strong this process takes the starch out. Here is a cut & paste on it.
Phil
Our Gelatinization process follows strict protocols that have been developed and researched by academic institutions such as University Nacional Agraria La Molina. This protocol includes applying the correct temperature and time application to specifically selected Maca roots. This ensures that the nutrients contained in the Maca root are not destroyed. The process leaves the Maca powder a little darker than the raw powder form but it is not burnt and it is never irradiated.

NO but it does help level me off. When I do the maca my blood tests from one to the other are almost the same.
Here is a cut & paste someone posted at the yahoo group.
Phil
The following is some info I sent someone recently. Maca was shown
not to increase T in scientific experiments.

Maca stimulates the adrenals to produce it's own cortisol and DHEA
and probably a few other hormones as well. Since Maca is a food, it
has to be taken in much larger doses than what is recommended on some
products found in Health Food stores. I was doing great on 3
compacted level teaspoons(using a measuring teaspoon), which is the
approximate dose that most people find benefit at. Maca is expensive
at this dosage if purchased from a health food store and so it is
best to purchase it in bulk 1kg packages, which actually turns out to
be quite cheap.

This is a website by a lady that uses Maca and she provides good
information and dosing instructions as well:

This website sells Maca in bulk at the best prices I've seen:

The following is an excerpt from a doctor that personally uses Maca
for adrenal function:

"Henry Campanile, MD., offers Adrenal Balancing Maca root
In keeping with its mode of acting through the hypothalamus and
pituitary, maca has a balancing and nourishing effect on the adrenal
glands. Henry Campanile, MD, a 50-year old specialist in internal and
family/complementary medicine practising in Florida states: "I happen
to have been born with only one adrenal gland just like my father. I
started taking cortisone in my late twenties to relieve the fatigue
which I was already feeling. Knowing the dangers of long term
cortisone use, I looked around for an alternative, and this
circumstance is what got me interested in complementary medicine. I
started using pregnenelone about 10 years ago and it has been fairly
satisfactory. But one of my patients told me about Maca and I started
taking it about a month ago.

It is phenomenal! I haven't felt this good since I was 20 years old.
I have so much energy and look so well, my patients have remarked on
it and told me how rested I seem. I've got so much energy now, that
I've started an exercise program". After trying it on himself, Dr
Campanile began using maca with his patients. My first patient to
take maca capsules was experiencing hot flashes and other menopausal
symptoms. She started feeling much better after using this herb for
only four days. I'm also employing it with patients who have a low
adrenal function." "

Phil, where did you purchase this Maca from if you don't mind me asking?

Right now I'm using the NOW Foods brand of Maca. Also what dosages are you currently on?

Thank you,
John

Maybe I should do some reading on this stuff.

But I have to say, the phrase "without the hazards of prescription drugs". It is utter nonsense to suggest that an herb that comes from nature is automatically safer, or more efective, than a pure compound produced in the laboratory. After all, pit viper venom is "all natural", too.

This point is reinforced by the fact OTC's are generally extremely inconsistent in both dosing and bioavailability. Moreso, they may contain any number of previously unrecognized compounds which may later prove dangerous. Let's keep this in mind when considering ANY supplementation--whether a prescription or OTC drug, or an OTC "natural product".

SWALE is right I am very careful were I buy my supplements and I don't use any with out my Dr. knowing and approving them. My Dr. says the same thing. That is why a lot of guys are trying DIM and complaining it does not work. When they try the one by PhytoPharmica then it works.

I take 1/2 a tsp full in the morning with some sugar free apple sauce I mix it. And 1/2 a tsp full at lunch I mix it in my yogurt.

I but it from.
