Obesity, testosterone, sleep link examined May 15, 2007 04:27am GIVING men injections of testosterone may help them lose weight and improve a debilitating sleeping disorder, researchers said. Australian researchers are conducting a series of studies looking at the links between testosterone, obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea, a medical condition in which patients have interrupted sleep because the muscles of their upper airway relax and they choke. Researcher Dr Peter Liu, from the Anzac Research Institute, said men with bad sleep apnoea can wake up to 1000 times a night. About 70 overweight men with sleep apnoea are being recruited for a study in which they will be given diet and exercise advice, and some will also receive testosterone injections. Their sleep patterns will be measured in an overnight laboratory study. Dr Liu said obesity and sleep apnoea were already known to decrease testosterone levels, while low testosterone levels were known to cause obesity and sleep apnoea, "creating a vicious cycle". "The purpose of this study is to discover if testosterone therapy can break this cycle by helping men lose weight and thereby improving their sleep apnoea," Dr Liu said. "I think what we will find is that testosterone is involved in the causation of obesity and it's involved in the causation of sleep apnoea. "Hopefully we'll prove it one way or the other." The study is a collaboration between the Sydney-based Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, which examines breathing and sleep disorders, and the Anzac Research Institute's andrology laboratories, which studies male hormones. It comes after research reported in the February edition of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found men's testosterone levels have dropped 20 per cent in the past two decades. Dr Liu said prospective volunteers should contact 1800 828 717.
