Selegiline and Adderall---Marianco--Others?

I recently started Adderall a couple of days per week and was told by my Doc that I should discontinue Selegiline. I only use 10-15 mg of Adderall at a time and then only a couple of days per week. I would potentially like to take Selegiline at 2.5 -5 mg per day.

Could using these together cause me problems? If so is there another ADD type drug that might work with Selegiline?

Selegiline is an MAO (monoamine oxidase inhibitor). Taking an MAO inhibitor with a stimulant drug like Adderall can cause a hypertensive crisis- sudden, catastrophic increase in blood pressure, even to the point of stroke.


Any of the common ADD alternatives are going to pose the same danger.


What about taking just the selegiline? I took a single dose once and found it had a very focusing effect. I didn't continue it because it also really interfered with my sleep.

According to this,
as long as you keep within dosing guidlines, the danger is minimal. The greatest hazard is with non-selective MAO inhibitors. Within normal dosing guidlines selegiline is a b-selective MAO inhibitor. However, when you exceed recommended dosages, selegiline loses its selectivity, and becomes hazardous.

cpeil2, I was unable to find the dosing guidelines and any info relating to the interations of these two drugs at the link provided. Was there another website or something I am missing?

Maximum: Do not exceed recommended daily dose of 10 mg/day because of risks associated with nonselective inhibition of MAO (potentially serious food or drug interactions may occur at higher doses).
Hypertensive crisis risk: Selegiline can be given with active amine-containing medications and tyramine foods as long as recommended dose is not exceeded. However, report any possible symptoms suggestive of hypertensive crisis.
