What's in beer that can rev up sex drive ?

I think a good deal of folks here know that I've been complaining about low sex drive.

Now, I want everyone to know that I do not drink beer on a daily basis, not even on a weekly basis. However I've consistently noticed that when I have 1-2 beers that my sex drive goes up very noticeably. The reason why I'm asking you guys about this today is that yesterday evening I had 2 beers while spending time at a friend's place. About an hour afterwards and most especially today (this morning) I found my sex drive to have increased to a noticeable degree.

From memory I think beers contains B6, and B6 is a co-factor in the biosynthesis of GABA, and Dopamine and Serotonin too I think. However I doubt this is an effect of serotonin because yesterday I had 50 mg of 5-HTP and what little sex drive was there vanished into thin air.

I know that alcohol also increases Estradiol--now how fast does booze increase E2 ? My E2 was at 25 pg/ml last time we checked. Now I had new test performed last week, so It may or may not have budged much from where it was last July.


I also think that alcohol is known to increase Dopamine.

So there appears to be a few possibilities as to why I got that effect. What I find hard to find out is what among those is most likely. On the other hand it may be that many do take place, and as a whole they produce increased libido.

By the way, red wine doesn't seem to produce that effect--I have a glass a red wine about once a week because of the resveratrol benefits.

Vitamin deficiencies cause problems; vitamin excess does not produce any benefits.

Alcohol increases the level of free testosterone circulating in the brain. (See my post about the study in lab rats.)

Moreover, it is said that alcohol initially interferes with the action of the Leydig cells in the testicles, thereby reducing testosterone output, which is sensed by the hypothalamus and who responds in turn by secreting more LH. The LH secrection and related activity is what, in part, contributes the enhanced libido in some males.

I think it has a lot to do with the simple fact that it makes a person aggressive, and makes a person think in his own mind that all the women want him. Which boosts confidence in himself that hes a stud and you must spread your seed and multiply.

In my case, it has to be more than just that, cause remember that my sex drive has recently resurfaced after a 8 year vacation That's some vacation for sure

It doesn't make the way you describe, and like I said, there's to be a differential explanation cause in all of those past years, there would have been social context conducive to feeling a stud. What's more, I'm not yet confident but this affect seems more prominent on beer, and not other alcoholic drinks, but again, I'll have to conduct a few experiments on myself and then will report on the outcome.

Chip - i experience the exact same thing as u.

I did a post on it the other day but i can't remember what thread it was in - it was pretty much exactly the same as yours though. Had 4 mid-strength beers the other night, and that night and next couple of days i was on heat!

I don't drink often.

We got the same tastes in beer then cause the Pilsner is top of the list for me as well. The others I don't know though, but the pud I hang out at does have a heck of a lot of beers, so I'll give em a go too.

I think James is pretty much right, except that alcohol depresses test production while the alcohol is in the system. The exact biochemical mechanism is unknown (to me). But after it wears (sleeps) off the hyptthalmus goes into overdrive producing LH in an effort to bring test levels back up to homeostasis. The inertia in the system causes a spike in test levels the next day. Hence the horney hangover. The net effect if you dring daily is the yoyo effect and a higher average test level than if you didnt drink. An immediate increace in libido is probably the well known loss of inhibition effect of a couple drinks and an increase in blood glucose due to the rapid metabolisn of ethanol to glucose.
