see your primary care doctor and get an evaluation. He or she should be able to diagnose the disorder and help to isolate some of the possible causes. He or she needs to rule out some medical conditions that can be evaluated thru bloodwork. If he or she finds that your general health is good, the doctor may refer you to a psychologist for psychotherapy or start you on antidepressants or both. When medical doctors refer to me, they know that I will be seeing their patient more often than they will. they expect feedback. For most of my clients this will involve weekly sessions. In some severe cases, this may be twice per week or I may refer them for more intensive in-patient or outpatient treatment. When depression involves more somatic symptoms, i.e. insomnia or intestinal problems, the treatment may require the combined efforts of myself, a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner, and the primary care doctor. Many cases of major depressive episode clear in a few months. some of the more complicated cases with multiple somatic involvement may take several months.

I am 54 ,since I was in my early 20's I have had random depressive episodes that lasted no longer than a few months. About 5 years ago I had what I can only explain as a nervous breakdown thrusting me into a sudden depression like I have never had before. Obsession, depression, high anxiety pretty much all at once. Leading up to this event my life was pretty good but I was abusing my body without realizing it. My wife and I would go to bed at around 8pm watch TV and drink maybe 2 to 3 glasses of wine. Because of the alcohol I did not sleep mostly waking up at around 2pm and not sleeping much after. To get through the day I would drink a Starbucks Venti with 2 added shots of espresso on the way to work and I would do the same on the way home. I would also drink maybe 1 coke later in the day. After reading this board I am guessing I really screwed up my adrenal glands which most likely caused this event . They have not healed and I have never really gotten out of this depression for more than a few days at a time. My adrenals have never been tested however. On my last lab test I had a low free T level 5.9 so my Dr prescribed Androgel which I have been on for about a month. I just did my labs and my free was up to 15 and my total was just over 800. Will adding Testosterone help in healing my adrenals? Are there other things I could do or take to aid in adrenal repair? I might add I still drink coffee but only 1 cup a day. I have also tried an SSRI Lexapro and the side effects were worse than the depression itself. I don't want to try another one. Thanks

In some people anti depressants actually increase sexual desire and stamina. In a way the goal should be to try to get off medication if it is possible.
