Default Cortisol, stress and memory

This is an offshoot of the thread on Cortisol, stress and overeating. The first two links in this search page, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=cortisol+memory, document and explain the negative effect that chronic high cortisol levels have on both short and long term memory. Does anyone know any drugs that supress cortisol production ? Apparently the dqamage is done by the cortisol level itself and not by the ratio of C to its counter effective analogs, ie norepi, and T.

Chronic high levels of cortisol will do a lot more negative things than that! How about development of early diabetes, weight gain, high BP, cardiovascular problems, bone loss, cayse hypogonadism, cause mental disorder development (usually depression but sometimes severe anxiety), etc., etc. A friend of mine (well more of an acquaintance) has a version of Cushing's (there are several) and at one time had some information posted about that topic on this forum.

Have you had your cortisol levels tested - and specifically checked to see if you have one of the Cushing disorder conditions?

I would do that first.

If you have actual Cushing's (most cases are caused by a benign tumor on the pit gland or one of the adrenal glands), then supplements which normally help with cortisol are going to be damn near worthless... and (as I recall) the actual pharmaceutical drugs that suppress cortisol production (when taken in doses to counter the high levels of Cushing's) have side effects that are quite toxic - even life threatening in some cases. This other guy had an uncle or cousin or something who had a form of Cushing's not caused by a tumor and they finally had to remove both of his adrenal glands to completely shut down cortisol production - or he would have been dead within three months. He is now on prednisone, TRT, DHEA, preg, etc. as his adrenals obviously are no longer producing anything and the high levels of cortisol wiped out his ability to make anything more than very minimal amounts of T (basically made him a Primary).

Now if you just have moderately high, but chronic cortisol levels (let's say constant "high normal") then there are some various supplements with varying degrees of success in normalizing cortisol levels / secretions.

Thanks Jas. Most informative. I hadnt made the connection to Cushing`s disease and cortisol .
Its not me , my mempry is as sharp as it ever was. What were we tsalking about? Its my wife who is maybe having some problems with memory. She always has been high strung and prone to overreacting. I`m just now seeing the connection to her and cortisol. Seems the drugs that diminish the cortisol response are corticosteriods- not good long term, and benzodiazepines-. Matbe they had it right about 30 years ago when valium ( mother`s little helper) was all the rage. she`s gonna try temazepam 10mg/day and see if there is a change in memory function.
