I have been and been studying iodine for past year and is one of the missing links to my problems. Tale end of this made a huge impact about poly unsaturated and why it affects the thyroid because iodine protects your body from oxidation. I tihnk this is a huge factory in alot of americas problems. I have several tests to back this up verifying excessive oxidation of fatty acids. Since starting iodoral I can tell you my blood sugar has droppeed from 131 after 2 hour normal mean down to 94. I think The iodoral may be reason i am excreting large amounts of hormones in my urine because it making my body incredible inuslin, adrenal, thyroid sensitive. I am going to email dr flecthas about his information..I'm going to do do estrogen urine and also RBC fatty acid and it will be interesting to find out how it has changed

HAN - do you think the iodine supplements are helping or hurting how you feel? I've been taking 50mg/day for a few weeks and haven't noticed much difference either way.

Not really - it was suggested by a prominent doctor in this area to try, related to thyroid. Since I use sea salt this doctor suggested iodoral without testing. I used it for months with no positive effect. I have been trying to determine cause of facial angioedema (swelling) for same time period. Always suspected E2 elevated (even low levels were 25 on 13 to 54 scale) - or some type of "reaction" to test injections or HCG. Now today I learned that potasium iodide can cause a reaction - facial swelling. Needless to say I'm stopping the iodoral TODAY

One has to be careful with iodine because too much of it can cause hypothyroidism.

Studies have shown that when they increased iodine in the water supply in Denmark (I think that is where it was), they ended up with a higher rate of hypothryoidism.

Studies have also shown that when there is no iodine in the water supply or in any other source of intake for a community, there tends to be a higher rate of goiters.

We already have iodine in our salt and you hardly see people with goiters anymore.

Nevertheless, I do take 12.5 mgs of iodine on an almost daily basis. Sometimes I skip days because it makes my skin break out.

However, part of me remains skeptical about iodine on whether it would cause more harm than good.

From sttm, following on from what skeptic posted

Quote:
One patient from Germany informed me that there is government-directed iodination of practically every food which can be processed, including milk. And with this has come an explosion of Hashimotos the last 20 years!
If you have antibodies present it may be best avoided

I have some Kelp and I put it on my eggs and salad just doing this maybe 2 times a week it's some powerful stuff. I makes me feel light headed. Now I find out it's not the same as doing 12.5 mgs a day of Iodoral. The Japanese get a 50mgs of Iodine in there diet so I can't see how doing 12.5mgs can hurt. We are here suffering from low T and now I find out if we are low on idoine the hormores will not work as good. So I am going to try this and see how it goes. But first I need to get my Iron levels back up.

Good buddy
check transferritin, ceruoplasm - these protein bonds all escort iron in the body
CBC
folate
iron saturation %

make sure you are taking iron away from other minerals zinc, copper, calcium it binds with them, plus also fiber scrwes things up too

Your RBC and other iorn indicators will not drop untill you are in severe defieincy for a long ass time.
so basicsally you are iron deficient, but do not have anemia

Quest Diagnostics: Test Menu
Clinical Significance: Transferrin is a direct measure of the Iron Binding
Capacity. Transferrin is thus useful in assessing iron
balance. Iron deficiency and overload are often evaluated
with complementary laboratory tests.
Reference Ranges: Transferrin, Serum mg/dL
ADULTS: 188-341

================================================== ======================
Quest Diagnostics: Test Menu
Ceruloplasmin mg/dL
Adult Reference Ranges for Ceruloplasmin:

Males: 18-36 mg/dL

Approximately 80% of the body's copper is bound to
Ceruloplasmin. Ceruloplasmin is an acute phase reactant.
Concentrations are decreased in approximately 75% of
patients with Wilson disease, an autosomal recessive
disorder of copper metabolism.

Along with my low Ferritin my.
White Blood Cell Count was 7.0 range 3.8 to 10.8 Thousand /uL
Red Blood Cell Count was 5.42 range 4.20 to 5.80 Million/uL
Heboglobin was 14.2 range 13.2 to 17.1 g/uL
Hematocrit was 44.0 range 38.5 to 50%
MCH was 26.2 low range 27.0 to 33.0 pg
MCV was 81.1 range 80.9 to 100.0 pg
MCHC was 32.3 range 32.0 to 36 g/dL
RDW was 18.5 high range 11.0 to 15.0%

The women at the thyroid site said to have this testing done.
Serum Iron, Transferrin Saturation (also called iron saturation or % Saturation), TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity).
They also said "Your tests actually look normal (heard that before?) The MCV is at the low end, which means you have small sized red blood cells, which is caused by iron deficiency. The MCH is Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin..and goes along with the low MCV. I believe some iron will correct all of these."
So how bad am I.
I will ask for.
Serum Iron
Transferrin Saturatrion
TIBC
Ferritin
Ceruoplasm
Iron Saturation %

When they tried to correct goiter that was not responding to iodine they had to add in vitamin A and iron then it finally reduced in size LOL
