Blood testing is the only way. LEF.org and helthcheckusa.com both have affordable blood testing for vitamin D testing (the correct
test is 25-hyrox-D). Different people need different amounts. Some need as little as 2,000iu daily, others over 10,000iu daily.
To achieve the desired range of around 60ng, it takes me 8,000iu daily. My wife takes around 4,500iu daily to get the same blood level.
It would be very safe to take 4,000iu for 2-3 months, then
test to see where you are at, then adjust.
Then thing about vitamin D is that too little does very little good, and too much can cause excessive blood levels of calcium that can lead to problems. But you really want to get it right, the good things vitamin D helps you with, cancer, virual and bacterial infections, auto immune diseases, osteo bone and artritis, etc, make it too important to pass up.
