Subject: [Hypogonadism] Medications known to cause induce hypogonadism

Info from British Hypogonadism site

MEDICINES THAT CAUSE HYPOGONADISM

Another potential source of Hypogonadal conditions is the use of some
medications. Certain Anti-depressants cause such conditions, thereby
creating a "no win" situation for the patient and doctor.
Other medications and some surgical procedures create similar
conditions. BCG, for example, is used in the treatment of Irritable
Bowel Syndrome. It also causes Hypogonadism.
This page will contain more information as it becomes available, but
we urge authorities to re-assess their criteria for drugs with
serious secondary effects such as Hypogonadism.
Known medications
SSRI anti-depressants - Sertraline (Zoloft), Fluoxetine (Prozac),
Paroxetine (Paxil),Citalopram (Celexa), Escitalopram oxalate
(Lexapro).
Prolactin raising antipsychotic drugs 196

Opioids - Alfentanil (Alfenta) , Buprenorphine (Temgesic, Subutex) ,
Carfentanil (Carfenta) , Diacetylmorphine (Heroin), Dihydrocodeine
(DF118) , Dihydroetorphine , Diprenorphine , Etorphine (Immobilon),
Fentanyl (Sublimaze) , Hydrocodone (Vicodin) , Hydromorphone
(Dilaudid), LAAM (Orlaam) , Levorphanol (Levo-Dromoran), Lofentanil ,
Meperidine (Demerol), Methadone (Dolophine), Morphine , Naloxone
(Narcan) , Naltrexone (Trexan), Beta-hydroxy 3-methylfentanyl, N-
methylnaltrexone , Oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percodan), Oxymorphone
(Numorphan) , Propoxyphene (Darvon) , Remifentanil (Ultiva) ,
Sufentanil (Sufenta) , Tilidine (Valeron) , Tramadol (Ultram).

Why give Endocrine disruptors?
Opinion.
Is Hypogonadism an accepted side effect of medication? The regulating
bodies owe it to society to ensure that medications should not be
given the green light if they cause Hypogonadism. How many people
exist today with Hypogonadism an unknown, unrecognised contributor to
their own decline because of medication?.

Hypogonadism - low testosterone, low progesterone levels causing dysfunction in both men and women - is NOT a condition generally recognized by CONVENTIONAL medicine. The devastating effects (such as obesity, hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, depression and anxiety, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain conditions, hyperlipidemia) are not recognized as effects of hypogonadism. It is not a subject that is taught in medical school. Even endocrinologists, in general, do not recognize it as a problem. Thus conventional medicine physicians treat the end state condition (the cholesterol problem or diabetes or hypertension) rather than the root. Not recognizing the root problem makes conventional physicians not realize side effects such as sexual dysfunction or hypogonadism. Think about it, how many conventional physicians who treat menopausal (i.e. hypogonadal) women with Premarin bother to do a hormone panel to see what else is needed for replacement therapy? How many see that the weight gain and cholesterol problems and other health problems result from unbalanced estrogen therapy? Only a few.

Note that even hypogonadism is an oversimplification of what is happening. Stress can result in overwhelming the body's systems to maintain balance (including the adrenals), resulting in a multi-system hormone imbalance - one of which is low testosterone or progesterone.

Good post Phil.

Note also that many anti-convulsant drugs (Dilantin etc.) fall into this category. Here's some great info in that regard.
