Low SHBG is most associated with high insulin levels due to insulin resistance or diabetes - which is associated with Metabolic Syndrome.
SHBG is raised by thyroid, estrogen, and progesterone.
SHBG is lowered by insulin, testosterone,
DHT, growth hormone, DHEA, and other androgens.
Supraphysiologic doses of testosterone or other androgens can drive SHBG lower.
I don't have any information on what Dr. Crisler is up to.
However, perhaps it may be related to the above information.
For example, if one has insulin resistance/diabetes, it may be treated with substances/medications such as Actos or Avandia to improve insulin sensitivity. It may be important to aggressively treat insulin resistance since leaving it untreated results in a much higher risk of heart disease, hypogonadism, obesity, stroke, mood disorder, dementia, among many other illnesses.
