Default Shake /Meal

Ive always heard people say a protein shake should be taken right after a workout but instead of doing that I usualy eat a meal that I have pre-made.

Usualy it consists of grilled salmon , a large steemed yam, a large salad with no dressing, and 24oz of skim milk.


what are the pros and cons of doing so?

Generally a shake is faster and easier to get into your system. Plus, I know right after a workout sitting down and eating a big meal just doesn't sound good to me, personally.

I like to get 60-70 grams of protein and carbs (each) into my system within 30 minutes after a workout. The protein and carbs in a shake need minimal digestion before they're taken up by your system and all those amino acids and glucose start floating around in the bloodstream. Solid food takes much longer to be broken down and for the protein/carbs to then be absorbed by the bloodstream.

About an hour after my protein/carb shake I do then eat a meal.

Max is right on the money again. The liquid protein shake starts replenishing & feeding your muscles in minutes, I usually do around 30-40g. Then a meal about 1 1/2 hrs later with another 30-40g protein.

Awesome thanks Max and Role. Always helpful as usual. It does make sense. Yes, Max, I understand why you wouldn't want a meal after the workout . I get VERY sick after everyone of my workouts and throw up a lot of the times and then choking down a full meal sucks ha ha.
