"Unlike many other drugs, kids don't admit it because it's not cool to be on steroids, not to mention the fact that it makes you paranoid,'' explained Linn Goldberg, professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Most of the women I know don't even know what is classified as AAS,maybe these little girls were taking diet pills or creatine? And confused them with Steroids? Or is this more propaganda to sell ads? I didn't see any provavble statistics on that page, maybe I overlooked them? Hmm,,,,

I don't think anyone here believes it is true. The author cites this alleged stat (citing CDC) as propaganda to tell readers how evil steroids are? I.e. steroids are being forced on our little girls for crying out loud!

Mr. Brozner,
Before you write another article like this, how about trying to discover the truth for yourself and use common sense. This is filled with inaccuracies and speculation, and a simple examination of the recent medical journals proves that steroids, when used even at high doses, are much less harmless than what the media and uninformed doctors present them to be. For example, go to www.freemedicaljournals.com, click on The New England Journal of Medicine (which is a prestigious journal in the medical field), register, and type "testosterone" in the search function. There you will find a landmark 1996 study about 3 or 4 titles down entitled "The Effects of Supraphysiological Doses...." and see for yourself.

As far as the CDC statistics go, can you give me your source on that information? I am very interested in seeing how they came up with this figure, as it is certainly grossly exaggerated. Thanks for your time and next time please question your sources a little further instead of just believing whatever someone says just because they are a doctor or because they can give you statistics. Statistics are very easily manipulated, and often to the desires of the researchers themselves.

About 7.3 percent have admitted to using steroids, and that figure is thought to be two or three times higher.

Do you really believe this?? Did the CDC do a nationwide poll, or better yet how representative was the sample if not? I can say with confidence that not even .073% of freshman high school girls are using steroids. And why do you figure that it might be 2-3x higher than 7.3%? What gives you that inclination? The CDC is great at scare tactics, and this is one of them. Instead of being concerned about this, why don't they spend time researching why we never have enough flu vaccines for Americans? If 7.3% of girls in high school are using steroids, then be on the lookout for 7.3% or more of girls to look pretty manly and since steroids are so dangerous as you like to think, I guess we are about to have around 7% of our youngsters die. Use common sense, this is ridiculous.

"Unlike many other drugs, kids don't admit it because it's not cool to be on steroids, not to mention the fact that it makes you paranoid,'' explained Linn Goldberg, professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. "The girls believe it helps them shape their bodies, and the boys believe it helps them hit home runs, and so that's their identity.

What study has proven that steroids cause paranoia? Better yet, how is this empirically and conclusively proven? Girls do not believe steroids will shape their bodies. Most girls are scared to even take creatine for the fear that they will look too manly. I suppose I will contact Ms. Goldberg and get her references for this, because I am baffled.

"The body builders I've treated say it's really about shallow egos and lack of self-confidence, so you can see why kids are so at risk, especially since kids are, by nature, risk-takers.'' [/b]

This is quite a generalizaton, and I am surprised that a doctor would make such broad generalizations. OK, actually I'm not.

"Those are just a few things and those all lead to other things.''

Can you be any more vague?

"The heightened aggression that comes on might persist forever, as will changes in personality. As if adolescence wasn't tough enough, it heightens adolescence.

Again, where is the proof for this? There is none.

"About 10 years down the road, he can expect to start experiencing liver problems and heart problems.

Well I guess we better prepare for 7.3% or more of freshmen girls to have serious health problems in 10 years. Parents and the government had better start saving their money to pay for what will probably be some heavy-duty bills. This is going to really devastate the economy.

"They could be taking something that's not manufactured with any standards or safety controls,'' Goldberg said. "The FDA is excluded from analyzing supplements that are sold in your local stores, but the IOC studied supplements sold in the U.S. and found 18 percent were spiked with true anabolic steroids, though the label said nothing about it.

Oh my, another crazy statistic. If this is the case, why haven't we heard of people dropping dead from taking OTC supplements?

"Taking steroids, the pharmacy approach to looking better or performing better, is a bad idea. You alter nature and the reaction is highly unpredictable.

Do you not alter nature when you take any drug, whether it is legal or illegal?

Recently, I have begun e-mailing all people who print this misinformation because quite frankly I am sick of it. It is really a reflection of the herd mentality that we have in America today, where people only need face validity to determine the value of something. People laugh at me for doing this, but ranting on this board does absolutely no good for our cause.

As opposed to the more common and acceptabed surgical approach. For people bitching about the "quick fix" of steroids, they really need to examine the hundreds of thousands of people annually who resort to the quick fix of cosmetic surgery.
