improving fina conversion
i saw a couple ideas from previous posts that i'm considering using for my next fina conversion. i've read a few different recipes, took what i liked from each of them and came up with a method that i think works best. each time i seem to find someway to do it better or make it easier or faster. what caught my attention was not using the coffee filter for the gunk, at least with smaller batches. i never liked this step and started thinking how it did't really seem necessary. also i saw that some people felt the oven sterilization was unnecessary. someone stated that the ba or bb would do the job. i'm thinking they might be right. is that safe? the high heat exposure has to greatly reduce the potency. or if sterilization is a must then use a lower temp like 175, most ovens i think have a 200 minimum. so i guess get it to 200 turn it off and monitor it with a thermometer, no big deal. so what i'm wondering is how much ba the kits include and if more should be added. i noticed the kits are improving. the last one omitted the paper lab filter and this time came with a big ass 25cc syring. that should work much better than the 10cc. if only they could come with a 50cc one, that would kick ass. you could do it with one shot no messy whatman removal/replacing. so my next question is how much of the oil do you really need to dissolve the pellets. one recipe says half of it the other all but 5cc, i would prefer to use the least amount necessary to get the stuff dissolved and suspended. if you only really need 15 then why use more. but maybe the more you use the better because more will be out of the gunk and suspended in the oil. which if you don't squeeze through a filter could result in a big loss, say if you only used 10cc oil and 5 of it was in the goop. i might have just answered my own question there. ok next question, if you let the solution sit for a long time say overnight will more of the stuff you want settle down into the sludge? would it be better to only wait a couple hours? last question i swear, would you want to add more ba if you're not going to bake it? the kits don't say how much they contain and i don't know what the typical amount should be. hope i'm not being redundant here, i did run some searches, that's where i found the no coffee filter, no baking ideas. i want to keep improving the technique and really fine tune it. no sense wasting time and money. any tips from you fina vets out there would be very cool. things like when to use hot water baths and when not to, why not eliminate the guesswork. i find the hot water bath a must before filtering and i'm sure it helps when combining the disolved pellets to the oil to increase solubility. well it's off to ye old mortar and pestle, going for the best batch yet. the more feedback and criteques the better. maybe i'll compose a fina for dummies write up after i get this all figured out.
