Was just thinking about some potentially interesting DNP applications and would like your thoughts... DNP is generally a heated topic because of various views on its safety. I for one think that it is a compound that can be used extremely safely... assuming you agree, here're some interesting applications that I'd be curious about w/ DNP.
1) Using DNP to offset the post contest binge right after a competition. A low dosage of DNP would be taken immediately after competing until one's eating habits are in control and back to normal (1-2 weeks). The DNP would offset any fat that one would normally put on, keeping the person at contest bodyfat levels.
2) Using a low dosage DNP during a bulk... since DNP has been shown mostly to work on adipose tissue with humans, a low dosage of DNP during a bulk could allow one to increase muscle mass while staving off fat gains.
3) A constant repeating bulking/cutting cycle... 4 month bulk, 2 weeks moderate dosage DNP. The anabolic rebound effect from DNP would aid the bulking phase, while bodyfat would be lowered during the 2 week DNP cutting phase.

you sound like you're a big fan of DNP
how often do you use it and what has been your results?
There's no way you could use DNP during a bulking cycle. By it's very nature it makes it impossible to bulk up. That said, it won't destroy muscle tissue, but it certainly isn't condusive to building it.

It'd be possible to use DNP during a bulk if the dosages were kept low. It wouldn't make it impossible to bulk up, just more difficult to eat enough food to have a positive energy balance. I do agree that it isn't conducive to building muscle, though. The same enzyme that it activates to increase fat oxidation, AMPK, also inhibits mTOR and thus protein synthesis. It's not clear how DNP would affect partitioning in the face of a surplus of calories.
It could shred the extra bodyfat you put during the cycle while at the same time spare your muscle until your T goes back to normal?
I don't think PCT is a good time to use it. During PCT, your primary goals should be maintaining your muscle mass and strength. DNP would be counterproductive to both. I recommend eating at maintenance or slightly above (maintaining your weight) while trying to maintain your strength in the heavy compound movements. After test levels return to normal, then consider dieting.
Con, I thought that there was some talk of DNP being beneficial during PCT because it lowers T3 and allows one to keep the muscle, while shedding some of the excess fat? I'm sure you've seen the writeups. Is that just bunk?

There's no good evidence that DNP lowers T3, just one or two case studies of guys who showed up at the hospital with low thyroid who then admitted to having taken DNP. It's very possible that they had low thyroid precisely because they had taken T3 along with the DNP. On the other hand, there are many people who I've talked to who have taken large dosages (600mg/wk) for several weeks with no change in thyroid levels. Personally, I'm unconvinced that DNP has any effect on thyroid.
Second, it's just theory that low thyroid levels during PCT will help limit protein breakdown. We know that above normal levels are catabolic, but it does not then follow that low levels will be anti-catabolic. So even if you could lower thyroid, it's not even clear how it would effect protein balance in the face of low androgen levels. Personally, I want my thyroid in the normal range as I try to restore balance to my endocrine system.
Lastly, if you're "shedding excess fat" during PCT, then you're in a negative energy balance. This means that systemically your body is in a catabolic state. Coupled with low androgen levels, it's a recipe for muscle loss. PCT is not the time to be dieting.
Keep in mind that the write-ups you find on DNP usually get more wrong than they get right.
