A: I was a body guy, a bodybuilder, sports, performance, I was in the thick of it back in the 1980s, back when the standard gear was a weightlifting belt, a bottle of steroids, and a membership to a hard-core gym. Fitness was secondary to packing on slabs of muscle, by any means necessary.
Q: I'm surprised you brought up steroids. I thought it might be something you'd rather not talk about.
A: People are too hard on themselves when they take the wrong path. To truly be healthy from the inside out we need to practice forgiveness and honesty, we need to forgive ourselves and others. I was a kid then, in my 20s, but still I think it's important to learn and remember the lessons. Most people have gotten involved in unhealthy things at various points in their lives. You gotta take responsibility and own up to that, but then let it go so you can feel good about yourself. People underestimate the importance of emotional health.
Q:Is this a recent shift in your thinking?
A: In a way it feels like a natural evolution. For me, who's been studying this for 20 years, it's not about diet, not about diet pills, not about surgery. It's about transforming from the inside out — letting go of the old unhealthy ways of thinking, acting and reacting and replacing those with new and empowering beliefs about health, about living, about yourself.
