When the U.S. Olympic Committee on Thursday permanently banned controversial track coach Trevor Graham from its 15 training centers and sites, it was a move at once symbolic and significant and could signal the end of one career while sending a strong message to those in his profession.

Graham, a former Jamaican Olympian based in Raleigh, N.C., has coached at least seven prominent athletes who have either tested positive for doping offenses or been suspended for the same. They include, most notably, sprinters Justin Gatlin and Tim Montgomery. One of his former athletes is Marion Jones, who has not tested positive or been suspended but has been embroiled in the BALCO case.
