Default Benching

Ok bro's I was just wondering if it matters that I stop any where between 1-3 in from my chest during presses. There's this one guy who thinks im shorting my self but Im benching way more weigth then this guy and my chest is also bigger. So does it really important to go the full ROM during bench presses??

-thank you-

Bob Smith, well when I try to go all the way down to my chest, my shoulders feel like they are taking to much of the weight. It's mostly in my right shoulder, I use a wide grip and I dont feel any pain but it just feels like im overloading my right shoulder. I have my buddy watch my form during my presses and he says that nothing looks wrong. Plus isnt it ok as long as my arms are hitting a right angle ( 90' de)?

-thank you-

No - it's not the same and it's not a bench press if you don't bring the weight all the way down. Bring your elbows in instead of out and take a slightly narrower grip.

Try a narrower grip, you sound like you're using a powerlifting (wider) grip. Then again, are you going for a heavy lift or bodybuilding?

I do full reps on dumbbells, and I will confess, partial reps on barbell lifts for the same reason - Pain in the shoulder. Every time I've ever injured myself it's been due to the Flat Bench. Inclines I do complete reps.

I'm sure there are other here who don't go all the way down on flats who are big as well...

I disagree bro-- Touching the bar to your chest uses your front delts too much and takes some of the pressure off your chest-- I usually stop about 2-3 inches from my chest and have had much better results in my chest workouts- Since I started doing this, my chest has gotten much stronger and has grown significantly--

Also using a closer grip will give more strength but that is because your triceps are now bearing more of the weight---

My rule of thumb is to keep it about an inch-inch and a half from touching my chest. Once you touch your chest you're taking the pressure off of your pectoral muscles. Touching your chest also includes the bounce (off the chest) to get up more weight. If you bounce the weight off your chest you're not only taking that weight away from your pecs but you're defeating the purpose.

I use a wider grip because I was always taught it helps widen your chest, I could be wrong but it's worked for me. The general rule of thumb is to have your forearms and upper arm form a 90 degree angle.

Goodluck bro.

Jesus fucking Christ you unworthy bunch of fucking tossers when will you all pull your damn fingers out, stop sucking your thumbs, throw away your baby blankets, stand up without a fucking walker, wipe the snot off your pink lil noses and lift the fucking bar in the manner that was intended ?

It's like the fucking squat myths revisited here - what next ? "I bench with a 3 INCH ROM cause my Uncle Bubba says my chest will become a utopian haven for shaved asian boys if i dont" Cunts. If your technique is so shit that you can not bring the bar to the chest and return it to arms length without feeling something is "wrong" then FIX YOUR FUCKING TECHNIQUE. If you to try and turn the bench press into an exercise that trains pecs to the exclusion of front deltoids then FUCK OFF to the special Island they're building for you where you and your tribal brothers the 1/4 squatters can all hold hants and chant as one "I'll make any excuse possible - just don't make me ACTUALLY LIFT A FUCKING WEIGHT WITH A FULL RANGE OF MOVEMENT CAUSE FRANKLY I'M TERRIFIED OF BEING SEEN TO BE WEAKER THAN ANYONE ELSE"

Get the fuck over it. Yes there are positions in weight lifting in which you will be forced to handle less load / use multiple muscles at once / overcome poor leverages / use some starting strength etc. Thats the idea. If he idea was to cut out any and all positionsa that induced any degree of difficulty then the Iron Game would be the Couch Game and we could all go home and drink bear.

Fuck all y'all. Lift the fucking bar.
