Default Dips

Could someone please help me out. On the tricpep dip machine in my gym you can set the handles to a close grip or a wie grip. Now I always persumed that wider grip hit more chest and the closer grip hit the triceps more. Could someone please confim this and maybe properly explain the difference.

Cheers

that's true to a degree. but the wider grip, when i used to do it, always seemed to hit the lateral head of the triceps harder and the close grip hit the long head. i think the wide grip also hits the outer pecs more but the real factor in hitting the pecs is whether or not you lean into the movement. the more you lean in, the more you activate the pecs. jsut my $.02....

never used one before but like chip said, if you lean forward you will change it to primarily a chest exercise. Stay straight up and down to focus on the tri's. I am sure those who have used a dip machine can comment on width of grip. I would prefer shoulder width.

cheers guys that is a real help. Never really thought about the angle it is performed at dictating the muscle it hits, but is clear now you mention it.

Thanks again

And I'm sure you simply made a mistake Chip, but there's no such thing as an outer pec...or an inner one for that matter. Good advise otherwise.

For me, when I'm targeting my triceps, I'll keep my legs straight up & down. This seems to keep my torso from leaning forward. For chest, I'll bend my knees and cross my ankles behind me, which tilts me forward. Great exercise!

i think you misunderstood. i did not mean the outter pec is a muscle in and of itself but rather a region, or area,of the entire pec muscle. surely you've felt the doms in the upper pec 'area' after inclines or the soreness in lower pec 'area' after declines? see where i'm coming from?
