Surely power lifting is more popular then weight lifting?
So yes I have wondered.
Perhaps it's because it involves equipment,i.e bench, squat rack, where as PLing doe's not so might be considered more optically appeasing to the spectator?

I dunno I'd think the average person would want to see some big beches, deads and squats. More then c&js or snatchs. Maybe drugs have something to do with it? They need to really stop drug testing the olympics... it's getting boring.

I'm pretty sure most of the WL in the Olympics are/have been juicing and/or on IGF-1,The size and muscle on them is past natural.
I think a lot of them really know their stuff as far as getting past drug tests.
There's always some that get busted thou

E.g 2004

Five more Olympic weight lifters have been suspended for failing drug tests, including two who were barred just before their competitions, the International Weightlifting Federation said Thursday.

The athletes tested positive for steroids in compulsory pre-Olympic drug tests of all 260 weight lifters.

The competitors expelled were Wafa Ammouri of Morocco, Zoltan Kecskes of Hungary, Viktor Chislean of Moldova, Pratima Kumari Na of India and Sule Sahbaz of Turkey.

The federation suspended Nan Aye Khine of Myanmar on Monday after failing a drug test following her fourth-place finish Saturday in the 48-kilogram, or 105-pound, class.

Failed drug tests have dogged weight lifting for years. Two Romanians were expelled before the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, and during those Games, four weight lifters failed tests and the Bulgarian team was stripped of three gold medals.

Eleven weight lifters from 10 countries, including a world-record holder from China, tested positive at the 2003 world championships in Vancouver. Then three Bulgarians were suspended this year before the Athens Games, including an Olympic champion, Galabin Boevski, who was barred for eight years.

I wont go back further then that LOL

1896 was the first year of Olympic weight lifting.
I dont think power lifting developed as a sport until later, but heres a goods thread with a lot of incite, into the chronological development of PL and WL as sports.
I think your right about the drugs in power lifting being a main contributing factor as to why it is not also added as an Olympic event.

Check this out, this is some lift,it involves three seperate movements really 1.get it off of the floor to the chest 2.then front squat it to the standing position 3. finish with a massive military press to get it above the head.

Where as Power lifts are just a one motion movement, hence regarded as minor movements.
I can see why people like this sport
It's crazy!
