Default Olympic Squats?

I thought going down past the point where your upper legs are parrell to the floor is dangerously bad for your knees. Then in the 5 x 5 you guys are reccomending doing these with as much wieght as possible? It sounds really dangerous to me....

I guess thats the difference between a basic squat and an olympic squat. I have a "dangers of squatting chart" right in front of me. Its from like 1980 I think but it specifically says that it is dangerous to go past that point. I will try olympic squats with lighter weight.

Dude. I'll pay you $5 to steal that poster for me and send it to me. If nothing else, please take a picture of it with a digital cmaera and post it up here. I'm serious, if you can steal that poster, I'll make it worht your while. I'll send you some cool powerlifting gear or something.

Matt

BTW, you might be in the biggest pussy gym of all time. Take some pictures of any other ridiculous but funny stuff in there.

The warning is incorrect. What there should be a warning for is not going down to at least parallel - in addition to making people think they can do more weight (and it's an ugly miss from the 1/2 squat position with no spotter - they go straight down) stopping at midpoint can place some serious stress on your knees. There is nothing wrong with using the full range of your body. Do it smart/safe - get comfortable. Don't push it right away. But do it. You'll actually find that full range squats when performed correctly can be very theraputic for certain knee issues.

ya i did them yesterday like the guy in the second picture and my knees didn't hurt at all, whereas they normally feel like shit and everything is popping. normally i use a belt and knee wraps and i didn't need anything at all while doing these. i tried to get to the guy in the first picture but couldn't get down that far. they felt great as far as the stretch i was getting in my hams go, i've never felt like that before. some guy comes up to me and says "isn't that bad for your knees though, i'm in medicine and that's what my professor says" or someshit like that, so i said they feel great like this. but they are awesome.

I'm closely related to 3 doctors. Med school taught them jack SHIT about training. They know less then most of the newbies on this board, and they are 3 VERY intelligent people.

Next time that guy comes up to you, tell him if he's so impressed with credentials that you are squatting exactly how you learned from people like Dr. "Squat" Hatfield. He has the fancy pedigree on his wall along with a 1000 narrow stance squat. I'm willing to bet he knows a thing or two about how to squat healthy.

Oh yeah, he did that 1000 plus after the age of 40, and is still very healthy today despite being 60+ years old.

Disa is badass and pretty cute too.

Don't get me wrong, Hatfield is a pretty whacky guy, not that I'll get into it here. But you cannot dispute that the man knows squatting.
