Default Small time Bodybuilder wants to adapt training for sport

Hi, rare waves here so;

I've been bodybuilding for looks and the feeling for 4 years now with no massive success but people do comment and it's changed my life.

I recently went surfing in Madagascar and although I was impressed with my fitness I want to take it further.

As my girlfriend puts it 'You've got all these muscles but they don't actually work'; I get tired fairly easily I thought, until I surfed and didn't ache unlike the others. So I want to develop:

- core stability (mostly)
- more endurable strength
- muscles that are used in surfing
- flexibility
- stamina

; all the things you don't focus on in bodybuilding. I need to learn how to do a differnt kind of training (`real` training), while I know how to lifting heavy I'd like to adapt this knowledge to more useful strength.

I may also try to build a little mass at the same time because it's fun.

So,

- can you recommend a book aimed at sports people

- core stability exercises that make you puff; I enjoy lifting wieghts but i'll give pilates etc a go if it really works

- leg flexibility

Thanks for any pointers

I only have a minute, so this will be less than optimal, but I'll be back sometime.

If you want a core building + muscle building workout, then I would focus on squats, deadlifts, goodmornings and RDL. Of course, some direct ab work wouldn't hurt. Between all of these exercises you'll get much thicker and stronger in the core. You can then add in a few extra to his your other muscles if you wish.

Now, as far as developing surfing based endurance and muscles goes: SURF!

You don't train for a marathon by sprinting. You don't train for a wrestling match by boxing. You don't develop "surfing abilities" by lifting weights.

In other words, get sport specific, bro. If you want to be a good surfer, then surf. Sure, you can supplement your surfing with jogging and some kind of resistance training, but the jogging and training alone are going to do nothing to increase your ability to surf. Get what I"m saying?

Reebok makes a Core Board that is good. I'll look for it, but you can do a ton of stuff on it and I could see that transferring to surfing very well. It is basically a board where you stand on it to perform exercises and you can adjust the level of stability depending on your stability level and the exercise being performed.
