Default Tone up and GAIN weight

I have the opposite problem of most in the fact that I have a hard time keeping weight on. I am working hard at toning up my body, but finding myself losing weight as I do it. I want to put on 10-15 quality lbs. currently I am 5'9", 118lbs and targeting the usual legs, inner thighs, and rear. My workout was cardio 3x week with weights the other two days, but again, I found that I was losing weight. If anyone can offer some suggestions of a better workout schedule or diet advice I would appreciate it.

I do not eat red meat or fish, but I do suppliment with protein shakes.

For one, you need to eat more. If you are consistently losing weight, then it means indubitably and without a doubt that you are not eating enough to maintain/gain weight. Up your calories.

Also, if you're looking to be "toned" you may want to start lifting with your other muscle groups. What good does leg exercises do for your chest or arms?

I usually eat several small meals throughout the day, but also have a very high metabolism. As far as my upper body is concerned I am pretty happy with the way they look. I am just having trouble really toning those hard spots. Thanks for the help.

Ohhhhh! I see, so you're hoping for spot reduction. Not to burst your bubble, but you can work your "trouble spots" all day long and it's not going to do a thing as far as removing fat.

Now, looking at your avatar, I can tell that you're pretty damn lean. You'll either have to lean out further or get significantly larger and then leaner to fix those areas. Honestly, you will more than likely have those spots until you get shredded.

There again lies the problem. I can't seem to get larger.

Aye there's the rub! I guess it makes sense, I mean you ARE a girl, but if you want to grow muscles then you have to stop working out like a girl. LOL

Why don't you try and switch the cardio with the weights. Cardio doesn't grow muscles. Weights do. Thus, 3X/wk lift and 2X/wk cardio. This will also aid in keeping you from burning too many calories and thus loosing weight.

Along the lines of not working out like a girl: SQUAT!!! I could be wrong and assuming too much here, but I doubt you squat. In fact, from your post, I'd bet your routine is leg extension, leg curls, abductor/adductor machine and the glute machine. I'm sorry, that routine sucks. You could get the exact same stimulus(but better!) by squatting. That's one exercise to do what you now do with 5.

Squat and do leg curls. Squat 10 sets if you feel the need to have a high volume workout, but SQUAT DAMNIT!.

LMK if I got that all wrong and I'll come up with something else.

GREAT!! I like it when someone tells me like it is! Squat, squat and more squat, huh? I will focus on that more. If you couldn't tell I don' know a whole lot about what will work for me. I am very very fortunate to have the metabolism that I do and it takes very little for me to shape up. However, I am getting older now (38) and it seems like it's harder to attain the finishing touches I want.

Since you have been so helpful, any thoughts on diet? I eat throughout the day, no red meat, no fast food.

Squats and deadlifts will put some mucsle on ya and burn fat like crazy...I seem to respond very well to deadlifts in particular, just adding those into my workout helped me reduce my BF dramatically while putting some very nice quality gains on me!

Well, damn baby, you should quit your job and do motivational seminars in High Schools. "Hi, I'm twobad. I'm 38 years old and I've got a better body than anyone in this school. Would you like to learn how not to be a fat ass?"

Remember when squatting to squat deep.

I don't know that I'd be a good advice giver on a diet. Everytime I come up with a diet for a girl they're like, "I can't eat that much" and I'm like, "what are you talking about? That's my breakfast. You get to eat that in a whole day" LOL I really would advise red meat, but it's not necessary. How come you don't eat it?

Did I offend you in some way to deserve that comment????? I am sorry that my problem happens to be the opposite of everyone elses, but I certainly don't think that I put it out there like I am better than anyone else just because I happen to be thin.

You were nice enough to offer some suggestions, which I appreciate, but then you come at me with "i'm twobad, I think I'm great, wanna be like me!!" I'm not about that.

I understand you are down on women right now, but we are not all evil.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no. That's not it at all. How come what I think are compliments are never perceived that way by the complimentee? LOL

I'll translate it for you. Basically, I was saying you are doing one hell of a job. You have a hell of a body even for a 20 year old and you're 38. Way to go! You are inspirational.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm looking for that same fountain of gold. wouldn't it be great if ronnie who gets up to over 300lbs in the off season could tone up and not lose weight and walk on stage at 300lbs ripped. you could be losing weight b/c youre losing bodyfat? its kinda hard to lose and gain at the same time. not impossible but you have to find the right formula and stick with it to a tee. fish esp. baked is high in protein. i don't see any reason to eliminate it! you may want to up the cals alittle. trying to replace or increase 10lbs of muscle while losing 10lbs is like a stand still. its better to do one after you've done the other but like i say not impossible but you may get disappointed as you may not notice the results right off. i've gotten compliments of being bigger and more toned when i hadn't gained any weight. its like for us who shot test. when we take 250-500mg we're only replacing what our body naturally produces anyway so you have to go beyond that. up the cals, not the fat, lift a little bit heavier to build muscle and let the cardio do the fat burning. some pros have found this loop hole and can come on stage heavier during pre-conest than the off season. hope this helps. still have my girl on my mind right now. i'm seriously thinking about sourcing. i live in a small town where my mail isn't really checked. everybody knows everybody esp. knows me so i wouldn't really be looked at as far a suspiciously. i know all the police officers and deputies and about two of the head postman at the po. whats best remailing or going ug lab?
